Relative and Absolute

Relative References

Relative references copy the formula you are using, but adjust it to its location.

In the above diagram, the formual In the second column repeats but adjusts to the columns around it.

for example, in my spreadsheet if there was a group of people that had the same daily expenses, instead of retyping the formula in each of their totals, i could reference the first "total" cell and fill the rest of the total cells for the other people to have their totals all add up to the same amount.

Absolute Reference

An absolute reference is when the formula is put into a different cell but it stays the same in spite of its new location

an example of an absolute reference would be if i wanted to show the total of each persons travel expenses away from the numbers, i would use an absolute reference to add the cells together and just enter the formula away from the numbers like in the above picture.

your example for relative references is correct but the way you have phrased it makes it sound like it is an absolute reference
